Spaceflight reviewed by Hypnagogue

Hypnagogue Reviews shows some love to Spaceflight Pharmacology.

Well, I’m not sure where the hymn’s hiding in there as you jump from the groovin’ bassline funk and dramatic string bursts of some lost 70s cop movie into a tangled frenzy of free jazz/prog keyboard madness, but hey, I’m along for the ride because it’s just glazed with cool. Weird cool, yeah, but still...

Lord of Stones video

A simple piano-roll video for "Lord of Stones", from Stillness in the Mirror. When I composed the piece, I never looked at it in a musical score view - it was much easier to work with in this form. The video probably looks best in full screen.

World reviewed by Oliver Arditi

A very gratifying review from Oliver Arditi:
For all its gentle ambient soundscapes, The World Above Us is not a recording that allows the listener to switch off their critical faculties, but provides a continually moving target, and rewards their close attention with strange beauty whether or not they think they’re managing to follow it.
Read the whole thing here.

Canon in small prime tempos

"Canon in small prime tempos" (June, 2012). A second contribution to Marco Lucchi's 5-key piano project. This is more in line with the spirit of the original challenge; the piece uses only five adjacent chromatic notes (F through A). This strict tempo canon was likened by one listener to miniature Nancarrow.

On D

"On D" (June, 2012). For Marco Lucchi's 5-key piano project. All the sounds in this piece were drawn from a single sample, a piano sounding a D below middle C. (It's heard in the clear at the very beginning.) Using a sampling synthesizer called Iris, several dozen new sounds were created from this sample by drawing different patterns on its spectrogram.

Sway

"Sway" (sample) (August, 2012).

The full track is available on the Paragaté album Spaceflight Pharmacology.

I don't specifically remember writing this piece. It was dug out of the sketch book months after it was originally made (it was probably a slightly-edited improvisation to begin with). I set out to work on it, but it would not be fiddled with, and I decided it was finished as it stood.

Rust Petals

"Rust Petals" (sample) (May, 2012).

A friend on SoundCloud described the sound of this piece as velvety, a great word for what I was going for here.

Eye-Beam

"Eye-Beam" (sample) Tim Risher & Tom DePlonty (April, 2012).

This piece, "Eye-Beam", is probably one of the more sweet and straightforward Tim Risher and I have written together. The full track is available on the album The World Above Us.

Petrichor

"Petrichor" (sample) (April, 2012).

The full track is available on the Paragaté album Spaceflight Pharmacology.

A simple piece for a gray morning. The sample in the last part of the piece was recorded by a big bush in the corner of my backyard. It was filled with little brown house wrens, singing their heads off.

Cork on the Waves

"Cork on the Waves" (sample) Tim Risher & Tom DePlonty (March, 2012).

A new version of a piece we originally recorded in the early 90s. Available on the album The World Above Us.

Two pieces for Marco Lucchi

"Two pieces for Marco Lucchi" (March, 2012). Marco is another composer on the Auraltone Music label, and an on-line friend. He's recently composed several sets of pieces where one acoustic track (like a short piano piece) provides the source material for the others, which process the source electronically in different ways. I've had my own go at the same idea here.

Where to Find Food

"Where to Find Food" (sample) Tim Risher & Tom DePlonty (March, 2012).

Because calling it "My Life in the Bush of Rush" would have been, well, just gross. This track appears on the album The World Above Us.
